What an AI girlfriend app knows about you

To feel personal, an AI girlfriend has to remember — and remembering means storing. A typical companion service holds your account details (email, sometimes phone), payment records, every message you send, any voice recordings and generated images, plus the usual device and usage data. None of that is unusual for a subscription app. What is different is how sensitive the content can be.

The good news: protecting yourself takes about fifteen minutes and costs nothing. Here is the checklist we run before paying for any companion.

1. Use a dedicated email address. Keep companion apps off your work and main personal inbox.
2. Use a unique password and a password manager. Breached passwords from other sites are the most common way accounts get taken over.
3. Turn on two-factor authentication wherever the service offers it.
4. Give a display name, not your real name. Nothing in the experience improves with your legal name.

Data

1. Read the retention section of the privacy policy. How long are chats kept after you delete them? Candy.ai published the clearest retention windows and GDPR-style deletion rights of our five.
2. Look for a model-training setting. If chats can be used to train models and there is an opt-out, use it.
3. Find “delete chat” and “delete account”. If you cannot find them in two minutes, that is your answer about the service.
4. Never share identifying details or real photos. Not your address, workplace, other people’s names, or images of real people — including yourself.

Money and devices

1. Check the billing descriptor. This is the name that shows on your card statement — see the table below.
2. Disable auto-renew if you are trying it out. Most plans renew automatically; SpicyChat was reported not to auto-renew.
3. Hide notification previews. So companion messages do not appear on your lock screen.
4. Log out on shared devices and use a separate browser profile if others use your computer.

Scams that target AI girlfriend users

Companion apps themselves are rarely the danger; people imitating them are. The patterns to recognize:

• Clone apps and “mod” downloads promising unlocked premium features — often malware. Install only from official sources (how to download safely).
• “Verify your age” pages that ask for card details outside the real service’s checkout.
• Romance and sextortion scams. A real person posing as an AI or a “model” moves you to another messenger, then asks for money, gift cards, crypto or intimate photos, and may threaten to share them.

Emotional safety

AI companions are designed to feel caring — instant validation, perfect availability, a memory for what matters to you. That is the appeal and also the risk. Set a weekly time budget, a monthly spending cap, and keep real-world plans non-negotiable.
